Lexington, KY - Maybe you've seen them cruising the Bluegrass — colorful double-decker tour buses, one with patio, open-air, roof seating to boot. William Gladstone, the 19th century prime minister of the United Kingdom, officially endorsed the double-decker conveyances by declaring, "The way to see London is from the top of a bus."
Tim Hart, a Shelbyville, Tenn., native, and his wife and lifelong Lexingtonian, Robin Atwell, owners of the new Lexington business Commonwealth Doubledeckers, LLC, are hopeful they will also be the way to see Lexington and the Bluegrass. The double-decker, English buses are more than an interesting transportation option. They are an essential component of Hart and Atwell's grander business plan.
"Initially, we were looking for a vehicle that we could use to do catering," Hart said, "along with the charters. We felt the buses would help us diversify the business. A lot of people want to use these buses for weddings, which go hand-in-hand with celebrating, with parties, and food and drink." Hart envisioned the open-roofed, 1958 Leyland Park Royal as a "mobile eatery."
