Buses open new options for entertaining transportation



Bluegrass tourists and residents alike can see the sights from new heights on the vehicles of Commonwealth Doubledeckers, LLC.

Lexington, KY - Maybe you've seen them cruising the Bluegrass — colorful double-decker tour buses, one with patio, open-air, roof seating to boot. William Gladstone, the 19th century prime minister of the United Kingdom, officially endorsed the double-decker conveyances by declaring, "The way to see London is from the top of a bus."

Tim Hart, a Shelbyville, Tenn., native, and his wife and lifelong Lexingtonian, Robin Atwell, owners of the new Lexington business Commonwealth Doubledeckers, LLC, are hopeful they will also be the way to see Lexington and the Bluegrass. The double-decker, English buses are more than an interesting transportation option. They are an essential component of Hart and Atwell's grander business plan.

"Initially, we were looking for a vehicle that we could use to do catering," Hart said, "along with the charters. We felt the buses would help us diversify the business. A lot of people want to use these buses for weddings, which go hand-in-hand with celebrating, with parties, and food and drink." Hart envisioned the open-roofed, 1958 Leyland Park Royal as a "mobile eatery."

Tim Hart and Robin Atwell are toying with ideas for their recent acquisitions — two double-decker buses.

The British-made vehicles — a 1955 Bristol Lodekka and a 1958 open-top Leyland Park Royal — make up the fleet of Hart and Atwell's new business venture called Commonwealth Doubledeckers.

The refurbished red and cream-colored Lodekka has already been out and about on Lexington streets for over a month now, taking groups to destinations like The Dame and Lynagh's. The open-top bus might be out by late summer...
